The Akron Fire Department was established in 1893 and serves residents in northwest Iowa and southeast South Dakota including the cities of Akron, Iowa, Westfield, Iowa and Spink, South Dakota. The department responds to calls for service in the largest fire district in the state of Iowa and covers nearly 365 square miles.

The Akron Fire Department is composed of 30 volunteers that respond to emergencies with 10 different apparatus and provide a wide variety of skills and special abilities. Some of the abilities include but are not limited to:

  • Fire suppression
  • Wildland fire intervention
  • Vehicle extrication and rescue
  • Medical emergencies
  • High angle rope rescue
  • Hazardous Materials response
  • Search and recovery
